ABOUT THE CONCERT - It rarely happens when performing a concert when one could say that all conditions were perfect for a live recording. I can safely say that this was one of those times. The organization, the audience, the theatre, the acoustics, the performers, the recording engineer, and the fact that the concert was recorded totally acoustic without the aid of amplifiers or monitors. Several audience members related to me that they felt as if they were on stage with the musicians. In the past, I have often attempted to do a live recording and have never succeeded... until now....
ABOUT THE MUSIC
Johtanson Written by pianist/composer Barry Wills, who as a teenager was one of the first Jazz musicians I had the opportunity to work with. He became a good friend and my first choice whenever I needed a piano player. In the 1980’s he wrote Johtanson and dedicated it to me and as I’ve always liked the tune, I decided to do an arrangement on it and dedicate it back to him.
What Is That Thing With The Swing Based on "What Is This Thing Called Love" with a kind of twelve tone scale intro.
New Irk, New Work Inspired by the music of the great trumpet player and composer, Kenny Wheeler, who was born in Canada.
Vero Nica Written and dedicated to Vicky or Veronica my partner of 22 years.
Lament For All The Young Lions . . . with todays difficulties that many young players who have been drawn to The Music may find themselves in.
Come to Me By Bernie Senensky offers a lighter, more happy contrast to the previous material.
Blues For E.J. Also a Senensky composition, dedicated to the late great Jazz drummer, Elvin Jones.
PHOTOGRAPHY AND ARTWORK
- Photographer Simon Bell, sometime before the concert, was fascinated by several Art Deco designs that appear in and outside the Registry Theatre, which resulted in a number of photographs used by Graphic designer Heather Van Uxem Lewis. She then took several of the images and created the entire CD design from Simon's photographs. At the time of the photo shoot, the musical "Cabaret" was being performed that evening, so, the inside and back cover are used to create a live music setting.
